Description

Power Bogies. The Tyke is a 7¼ ‘minimal gauge’ locomotive built to do a lot of work. It’s bogies lend themselves to be used under other projects.
The Tyke power bogie is a collaboration between it’s designer Colin Edmondson and CMD Engineering.

Design considerations.

Any short wheelbase power bogie has a tendency to rear up under load. This can result in the leading axle spinning wildly under load, hence the decision to use a single motor driving by chains. This also makes the provision of a sensible gear reduction a lot easier, increasing pulling power.
Primary chain can be adjusted by the motor, whilst secondary chains adjusted by the axle boxes.
Axle boxes take standard roller bearings for ease of replacement.
Rubber springs suit this application, as the damp out bumps and rail noise without any tendency to bounce or roll.
To allow the bogies to swivel freely on curves, the bolsters supplied are to be fitted to the underside of the vehicle are fitted with roller bearings. There are two sets of mounting points for these, so that the bogie carrying the heaviest weight can have the rollers widely spaced, this gives stability to the body.
Cable operated hand brakes are fitted.

What do you get?

The kit contains the laser cut steel parts. Wheelsets, rubber suspension springs and welded layshafts are optional extras.

What tools do you need?

If you have ordered the wheelsets and layshafts.
  • 10mm and 13mm spanners
  • Screwdrivers
  • Allen keys
  • A fine file or an angle grinder with a fine grit flap disc.
  • Wire strippers
  • A decent quality crimping tool.
  • A battery drill with adapters for allen keys, 10mm and 13mm sockets.

Specification.

Frames and buffer beams are 4mm thick, the top plate is 3mm. 20mm diameter pivot pin.
5” diameter wheels to 7 1/4” gauge society narrow gauge profile.
The cable operated hand brake works on all four wheels of one bogie.
The final drive ratio can be altered at any time from a 5mph heavy hauler to an 8mph ‘Gentleman’s light sporting locomotive’ by changing the axle sprockets.
