Edmondson Sit-Astride Carriage 7¼”.

The unique feature of the sit-astride coach is the monocoque structure, which uses the box body to carry the loads rather than having a separate frame. This makes it both strong and lightweight, ideal for portable tracks where it has to be transported on a trailer. But also for club and commercial use. (Less weight = more passengers!)

The upturned side to the footwells helps to prevent passengers dragging their feet, and keeps them safer in case of a derailment. Timber derailing bars are mounted under the coaches. If the worst happens these will crush and slide along the rails rather than allowing the coach to veer off to one side.
There are couplings on the ends of the coaches, and also on one end of each bogie, so the ‘spare’ coupling can be used for a safety chain. The bogies can be visually inspected by simply lifting up the seat cushions.

The bogies project beyond the ends of the coach body, to prevent a single heavy passenger sitting right at the end and lifting the other end of the coach clean off the bogie. This was necessary because of the lightweight construction.

Bogie Layout:
The coaches can be used with two bogies per coach on lightly laid track to spread the load.
Or in articulated form where a bogie is shared between two adjacent coaches.

It’s a simple matter of moving the bogie to another pivot hole and adding another coach. In articulated form the 9 foot coaches can be used on curves down to 6m radius without any risk of finger trapping. The shorter ones can safely go tighter than this.

Made from Zinc coated steel, so it has a great resistance to rusting and provides a good base for the very tough powder coated finish.
The first set supplied have been in use for over 12 years and are still in great condition.
