What a month August has been. Constant heatwaves, causing many of us trouble sleeping, track deformities, steam bans and the running locos facing challenges with overheating. Miniature railways have either had a lot more than usual visitors or been much quieter, extra precautions taken to keep volunteers safe with extended and regular breaks for water and shade, and providing the visitors easy access to the same.
We’ve had many emergency repairs come in through the workshop to keep the miniature railways running, we’ve seen your hard work on social media and have visited a few miniature railways this month, and your commitment and dedication to keeping the railways running and proving the best for your volunteers and visitors has been fantastic, you should all be so proud of yourselves for your hard work during a very challenging season.
Miniature & Model fest at North Weald
On 5th August we attended North Weald for their event, a day filled with trains, trade stands and children’s entertainment.
We ran a drive-a-train with our Scamp for the day, we had drivers from 3yrs old up to 92yrs old and everyone in between. Many people coming back for 2nd, 3rd and 4th turns! We also had a trade tent featuring brio compatible parts for the kids, pop pop boats and a selection of miniature railway products.
Check Books and Penrhyn Buffer
We introduced new laser check in books this month. We have hundreds of parts come in each week, and whilst we can confidently determine which product most belong to, it makes more sense to have reusable books to ensure the quantities are right. The penrhyn buffers have been quite popular this month also with 4 ordered and dispatched in one week.
Partial Solar Eclipse
August saw a partial solar eclipse, Chris was set up on the top of the fort with a chair, mug of coffee and a welding mask (fitted with a passive 15 shade lens) for it.
Powder Coat Ready!
Little stack of Colin Edmondson stock worked its way through the workshop this month and are now at the powder coaters changing colours.
This pile includes 2 Scamps, 2 Slate Wagons, A 5ft sit astride and a Tipper.
5 miles of welding wire.
So far this year, we’ve worked our way through 5 miles of welding wire making all sorts of components and assemblies for our customers. From small brackets and fittings to larger fabricated parts, there’s been plenty of sparks flying!
Swanley Park 1812
Each year Swanley Park holds a (traditionally) free fireworks display, which also means the Swanley New Barn Railway runs later than usual, up until 9pm. Our tail lamps worked the night shift ensuring all trains remained visible across the public park.
Due to the tinder dry conditions the fireworks display was changed to a drone display instead, which was beautifully done and included beautiful tributes to the railway on their 40th year anniversary.
